Choosing the Right Fence for Your Needs
Published on: December 3, 2015
If you have decided that it is time to add a fence to your property, you already understand the benefits. Fences can bolster the value of your home by adding security, privacy and even curb appeal. However, there are a wide variety of options to choose from, ranging in cost and features. Here are some of the most popular options and pros and cons of each.
- Wood fencing. One of the most used options for fences are wood panels or pickets. Wood panels offer one of the best options for privacy, while pickets are aesthetically pleasing in their classic design. The drawback to wood is that it can be expensive and it does require quite a bit of maintenance. Wood will need continuous painting or staining and will not last as long as most metal or vinyl options.
- Metal fencing. The picket metal fencing of wrought iron is beautiful and functional. It is very secure, making it difficult for intruders to climb or break through, especially with the classic spearhead top. However, true wrought iron is very expensive and requires excessive maintenance. Another option is decorative aluminum fencing that gives the same aesthetic appeal at a much lower cost and is much easier to maintain.
- Chainlink. If you are on a tight budget, chainlink fencing is reasonable and requires little maintenance. But you get what you pay for. Chainlink does not offer privacy, is easy to scale and does not add beauty to your home; it is purely for function.
Before choosing your fence, talk to your local fence or landscape contractor to decide what option will best suit your needs.
