Paver Patios Vs Decks: Which is Better?
Published on: September 10, 2015
If you have been considering either adding a deck or a paver patio to your home, you may be wondering which one is a better fit for your lifestyle and home. While there is no right or wrong answer, there are certainly advantages and disadvantages to both. Either one can add value to your home and give you more living area by opening up your yard for entertaining. But which one is better for your home will depend on a few factors:
- Yard composition. For many, a swampy or overly vegetated yard may mean a deck is a better option. Patios are not necessarily well equipped for muddy or poorly draining areas and can be overrun by plant life. Decks are built up off the ground, keeping your outdoor area dry.
- Maintenance. While wood decks are beautiful, they do require more maintenance than a paver patio. Wood must be protected, stained and cleaned to make it last and keep it looking great. Wood also will eventually need to be replaced, while natural stone pavers for a patio can last a lifetime.
- Cost. In many cases, a wood deck can cost more than a paver patio. However, it depends on the size and materials that are used. If cost is a concern, talk to your contractor about the different options available to stay within a budget you can afford. If you want a deck but a patio is more affordable, your contractor may have options to fit both your needs and your budget.
Still not sure which would be best for your home? Consult a landscape design company that offers both deck and patio installations. They can examine your outdoor area and discuss the pros, cons and costs of both options for your home.
