Using Lawn Edging In Your Landscaping
Lawn edging is used in landscape design for a variety of reasons, from creating a neat and refined appearance to containing grass and other plants in one region. There are many different types of edging that can be used, ranging in aesthetic value and in price. Depending on the look you’re trying to achieve and the ultimate purpose of the edging, there’s a wide range of choices to give your yard the look you desire.
Lawn Edging Choices
For most yards, edging will be used to define one area from another, as well as divide the ground so plants don’t spread beyond their borders. Edging like rocks and wood offer a more natural look, while brick, cement and man-made materials give a more urban appeal. Each comes with its own benefits and drawbacks, depending upon your needs.
– Rock edging. From small decorative rocks to large field stones, rocks can make a beautiful edging for your yard. They are durable and will last for as long as you own the home. However, they tend to be the most expensive, especially certain types and in large quantities.
– Timbers. Wood edging generally comes in the form of landscape timbers or railroad ties. These can look nice, and are fairly inexpensive. The drawback is that they will rot, and are not easy to use in curved edges.
– Man-made materials. There are many man-made edgings that are specifically designed for landscaping. Cement, brick, plastic and even metal edgings are available. These come formed and ready to use, however they do not have the natural appeal of wood or rock.
Talk with your landscaper to decide which edging will compliment your landscape the best as well fit your budget.
