Add Color to Your Winter Landscaping

Published on: July 24, 2017

Most landscaping efforts are focused on the spring and summer growing season. While this is a necessity in some regions of the country where winter brings snow, ice and cold temperatures, those who live in milder regions can have a beautiful winter landscape. There are winter flowering trees and shrubs that can add beautiful color to your landscaping through the winter months. Here are a few options:

  • Winter Jasmine. Add beautiful yellow flowers with the winter jasmine that tends to bend and arch for a flowing effect. This is a great shrub to plant on a slope or higher ground to highlight its bending nature.
  • Winter honeysuckle. While the small cream-colored flowers may not be bright, the fragrance of the winter honeysuckle makes up for its mild-colored flowers which can bloom as early as December in some regions.
  • Adding evergreens to your landscaping keeps a background of color all throughout the winter. Plus, evergreens do not need to be just green – they come in a variety of colors like blue, yellow, purple and many shades of green.
  • Wintersweet. Another shrub that offers both flowers and scent is the wintersweet, with a spicy, tropical aroma and yellow flowers for color during the winter.
  • Fruits and berries. Many trees and shrubs also have winter fruit or berries that are bright and colorful. Try adding holly, aronia, beautyberry or the flowering dogwood for color in your winter landscaping.
