Preparing Your Lawn for the Summer Heat

Published on: September 21, 2016

When late July, early August hits, there are many lawns that begin to look sparse and haggard. The high temperatures coupled with water restrictions in many regions can make it difficult to maintain a beautiful, lush lawn. However, there are ways to prepare your lawn to fair better through the summer heat. Here are some tips of the trade that landscapers use to foster beautiful lawns all summer long.

  • Stop fertilizing. Fertilizer can help maintain a lush lawn but it should not be used during the hot months. Stop using fertilizer about a month before the highest temperature times of the summer.
  • Mow often at higher levels. Mowing more frequently can help maintain a healthier lawn in the hot months. As the heat increases, raise the level of your mowing height gradually by up to 50% and mow frequently enough that you never cut more than 1/3 of the grass length at any time.
  • Water less frequently. You need to maintain deep roots to help grass stay healthy during those dog days of summer. Watering small amounts frequently can create shallow roots. Instead, water heavily in the morning or evening only a few times a week. This can promote deep root growth.

If frequent mowing and constant lawn care are too time-consuming, yet you want the beauty of a green lawn, consider hiring a professional landscaper. Your time is valuable and it may be worth the investment to have a professional company that can care for your lawn throughout the busy summer months. They can also offer advice on how to care for your lawn during the fall, winter and spring to keep your grass healthy all year round.
