Can You Have a Dog and a Beautiful Lawn?
You love your pooch, but your dream of a lush, green lawn went out the window once he took over your yard. Dogs, especially the larger variety, can do a number on your lawn and landscaping. Between those nasty yellow spots of grass and worn paths to their favorite areas, you may have given up on having the lawn of your dreams. However, it is possible to have a beautiful yard and a happy dog. Here are some tips.
- Plant a hearty grass or lay new sod. Talk to your landscaper about changing your grass type. There are many varieties that can withstand more abuse from traffic and pets, giving your lawn a fighting chance.
- Water urination areas. If you are diligent, you can reduce the chance of yellow grass spots by watering down the areas where you dog urinates the most.
- Training. Dogs can be trained to do their business in certain areas of the yard. This works best if you start training them when they are young, but you can teach an old dog new tricks with a little patience.
- Use more hardscaping. For those who have more than one dog, hardscaping may be a better option. Creating a larger area dedicated to a patio or even xeriscaping may improve the appearance of your yard.
Talk to your landscaper about other solutions. Some dog owners use moss or clover for green ground covering instead of grass, which is more forgiving. Your landscaper will likely have dealt with dog issues before and can offer suggestions for your situation to give you the beautiful lawn you want, while making it safe and friendly for your pooch.
